A striking polished slab of tiger iron displaying bold, flowing bands of deep red, golden metallic, and dark iron-rich layers. The natural banding creates a dynamic, wave-like pattern across the surface, enhanced by the polish which brings out strong reflectivity in the golden layers.
This material is composed primarily of hematite, jasper, and tiger’s eye, giving it both rich color contrast and a unique chatoyant shimmer in areas. The layered structure and vibrant tones make this an eye-catching display piece, especially under directional lighting.
Tiger iron is closely associated with ancient stromatolitic formations, making this not only a visually appealing specimen but also one with deep geological significance. Tiger iron originates from ancient banded iron formations created over 2.5–3 billion years ago in Earth’s early oceans. Oxygen produced by early photosynthetic microorganisms (cyanobacteria) reacted with dissolved iron in seawater, causing iron oxides to precipitate and settle in layered deposits alongside silica. These formations represent some of the earliest evidence of oxygen production on Earth and played a major role in the development of the planet’s atmosphere.
